This week, we end our WordPress plugins series with Slim SEO, which markets itself as a “beginner-friendly” alternative to other, similar plugins. Let’s talk about what this plugin does, how it works, and why you might need this plugin for your own website.
(Take a look at the other posts in our WordPress plugins series on Yoast SEO and Rank Math.)
Technically, there are a few different products to choose from, with varying features between them. Slim SEO is the main, free plugin. It can auto-generate meta descriptions, set up redirects, and add structured data to a site, among other things. Slim SEO Schema and Slim SEO Link Manager are premium plugins and offer additional features.
Slim SEO posits itself as a plugin that anyone can use, even if they don’t have coding skills or understand everything about SEO. It requires zero configuration once installed, making it easy to get started. It uses JSON-LD to add structured data for schema purposes, and otherwise monitors your site to generate sitemaps, redirects, and more.
If you’re new to SEO, or just want a simple alternative to other SEO plugins, Slim SEO may be your answer. It offers many of the same features as its competitors; here are just a few:
Breadcrumbs: You can use this plugin to help users understand your site’s hierarchy. This makes it easy to navigate from a current page to one of a higher level.
Meta Tags: With Slim SEO, you can take advantage of auto-generated meta title tags, description tags, and even tags for social media sites like LinkedIn!
Schema: Slim SEO creates schemas in order to optimize how content is presented in the search results. If you upgrade to the paid plugin, Slim SEO Schema, you can add custom schemas for custom post types.
XML Sitemap: Slim SEO creates XML sitemaps for your website. This includes images, so your site will still appear when people are searching for images on search engines like Google.
You can download the free version of Slim SEO here. Simply install the plugin, and then activate it. Slim SEO doesn’t need to be configured, and will begin working automatically. But, if you do want to insert some additional code from Google Analytics or some other third-party site, Slim SEO explains how to do so.
