What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of improving (optimizing) a website in order to increase its rankings in the search results and otherwise increase its search engine visibility.

What is an SEO Audit?

An SEO Audit is an evaluation of certain components of your website. Audits provide insight into whether your website is following SEO best practices.

How long does an audit take?

This can largely depend on the size of the website, but most companies can expect to wait about one month for their audit to be complete. What’s happening during that time, you ask? After our team collects information about your website, we interpret that data and create a list of action items to help you raise your rankings.  Our goal is to make sure that the audit is both easy enough for the client to understand, and thorough enough for a web developer to have all the information they need to make any of the more complex changes suggested.

How often do I need an audit?

Again, this can largely depend on the size of the site, as well as how many changes you’re making on a regular basis. As a general rule, we’d recommend a thorough audit about once a year. However, this shouldn’t be the only time you’re looking at your website’s SEO. A quarterly audit that looks at the most crucial components of SEO – errors, duplicate URLs, etc. – will ensure that no issues slip through the cracks.

What is included in an SEO audit?

The exact contents of an SEO audit can vary from agency to agency, but most SEO audits will contain certain key information, as well as action items that are meant to help improve SERP rankings. If you receive an audit from Relevance Advisors, you can expect a comprehensive document that details all the most essential steps you can take to improve organic performance. Here are some of the main pieces of information you can expect to receive:

Short Description: Infographic listing components of an SEO Audit. Links to a blog titled The Blueprint for Successful SEO Audits.

Long Description: The graphic portrays seven components of an SEO Audit stacked vertically. Each row contains a short description and a related icon. The first row is titled Current Organic Rankings and reads, “This is where your website ranks in the search results. This ranking is determined by page relevancy, content quality, and more.” The second row is titled On Page Optimization and reads, “An SEO audit will analyze various page elements - such as Title Tags and ALT text - for length, readability, and more.” The third row is titled Site Architecture and reads, “This portion of an audit examines how your website’s pages are interlinked.” The fourth row is titled Error Handling and reads, “This is a list of URLs that are returning errors, along with the error codes and a description of what they mean.” The fifth row is titled Site Speed & Performance and reads, “Load speed has a direct impact on user experience. An audit provides a list of opportunities to increase site speed and performance.” The sixth row is titled Backlink Profile and reads, “Backlinks increase the perceived legitimacy of your website. An audit provides the number of referring domains to your site, along with backlink quality rankings.” The seventh row is titled Google Analytics and reads, “An audit will analyze your GA4 dashboard and provide essential insights about your web traffic, audience, conversions, and goals.”

How long does it take for changes to improve SEO?

So, you’ve received your audit and made all the necessary changes. How long should you expect to wait before you start seeing results?

Obligatory disclaimer that this will vary site to site and depend heavily on what kinds of changes you were making, but you can expect to see results in three to six months. Factors like your website’s initial rankings and your competitors’ own SEO efforts will affect this timeline.
