Google’s popular browser, Chrome, was launched in 2008. Praised for its speed, sleek design, and innovative features like Incognito Mode, Chrome represented the future of browsing.
Now, nearly two decades later, Google seeks to recapture that image by making Chrome a fully “AI-centric” browser. Here is what’s changing in the new era of Chrome.
Chrome has evolved a lot since its inception. Here are just a few of Chrome’s features that will continue to be available as new AI tools roll out to users.
Page translations: Chrome makes it easy to switch between a page’s original language, and a translation you can understand.
Google Lens: One of Chrome’s existing AI applications, Google Lens helps users identify objects and landmarks, and recognize and translate text.
Chrome Cast: Using the browser, you can cast your computer or phone to any TV with Chrome casting capabilities.
Voice Search: You can search using your voice, which Chrome will transcribe and use to find answers to your query.
Here are the three new AI-powered features that are being rolled out to users today.
Gemini in Chrome: Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, is rolling out as a browsing assistant to users in the U.S. Gemini in Chrome will be able to summarize articles and websites, and even clarify or answer questions about what a user is reading. Gemini in Chrome will also be able to help users compare different products online.
AI Mode for the Omnibox: AI Mode is being added to Chrome’s address bar, known as the omnibox. This will allow users to ask more complex questions than ever before. Google is also adding contextual suggestions in the omnibox based on what you’re already searching for. So, if you’re looking for information about a restaurant near you, you might see recommended questions about operating hours or popular menu items.
AI Warnings: Chrome is using AI to stop users from being scammed or spammed. Using AI-powered scam detection systems, Google has been able to identify scam sites better than ever before. And Gemini Nano – Google’s mobile-centric AI model - will generate signals to be used by Safe Browsing mode in order to further prevent harmful scams from reaching users.
